Oxfam Rice Event 2023: Celebrities and Volunteers sell Oxfam Rice to support small farmers in poverty

The opening ceremony for Oxfam Rice Event 2023, Oxfam's annual large-scale fundraising event, was held today (10 June) at YM² in Kwun Tong. This year’s theme is ‘Fight climate change. Support smallholder farmers’, and roughly 1,000 people will be volunteering at 50 stalls across Hong Kong on 10, 11, 17 and 18 June. By selling Oxfam Rice, Oxfam aims to raise both awareness and funds to support impoverished smallholder farmers, who are affected by extreme weather conditions and face food shortages.

Guests who attended the opening ceremony today include (in no particular order) artists Tony Hung and Stefan Wong; Cheung Yuk Tong, Council Chair of Oxfam Hong Kong; Kalina Tsang, Director General of Oxfam Hong Kong; Cindy Chan, General Manager at DCH Logistics; Stephen Man, Managing Director Head of Consumer, Private and Business Banking at Standard Chartered Hong Kong; and Maggie Sze, Associate Director, Marketing at TamJai SamGor Mixian. In addition to the strong support from sponsors, volunteers, and the public, Tony Hung and Stefan Wong also sold Oxfam Rice at the event.

As global temperatures rise, climate-related disasters have increased threefold over the past 30 years. These disasters have caused crop failures and now smallholder farmers living in poverty face food shortages and are struggling to make a living. Cheung Yuk Tong, Council Chair of Oxfam Hong Kong, said: ‘Oxfam is supporting smallholder farmers around the world. For instance, we’re helping Nepalese farmers combat drought with advanced farming methods that conserve water. We’re also building small-scale water storage units in Guizhou, China, to collect sudden heavy rainfall to irrigate crops during droughts, and are setting up solar-powered insecticide lamps for villagers to reduce the increasing number of pests due to climate change.’ Oxfam provides comprehensive support to smallholder farmers through technical and disaster resilience training to help them cope with extreme weather and improve their livelihoods.

Tony Hung and Stefan Wong also called on the public to support Oxfam Rice Event 2023 at the event's opening ceremony so more smallholder farmers can learn more effective farming techniques, enhance their disaster resilience to cope with extreme weather and eventually lift themselves out of poverty.
