【Understanding Poverty through Grocery Shopping Experience】

Event Date: Sunday, December 17, 2023 (exact time to be determined)
Participants: Children aged 5 and above. Each participant must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

People have diverse expectations when it comes to eating healthily. Some prioritize nutrition, while others consider organic options. However, for individuals in low-income communities, even sustaining a household is challenging, let alone affording nutritious meals. Research conducted by Oxfam reveals that many low-income families in Hong Kong struggle to meet their basic nutritional needs within their food budget. Is it fair to live a life where one can only fill their stomach but not maintain a balanced diet?

Through this event, participants will gain insight into the daily struggles faced by low-income groups as they plan their meals with limited resources. During the activity, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Step into the shoes of low-income individuals and design a day's worth of meals based on their limited food budget.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of poverty in Hong Kong, with a special focus on the Kwun Tong district, which experiences high poverty rates.

Please note:

  • Limited spots are available, and registration will be closed once capacity is reached. There will be no additional sessions for this event.
  • Successful registration (monthly donation of HKD 180 or above) is required before the event or during the preceding period.
  • New registrations for the Oxfam Kid program between November and December will receive an email with instructions after successful registration. Participation is confirmed only after event registration.

'Inspiration and companionship are the best gifts parents can give their children.

There are many people in need of help out there. I’ve always thought about what I can do to help. I also want to set an example for my daughter QQ, and I want her to learn to show empathy and care for others.'

'Happiness is not about how much you take, but how much you give." I hope QQ will grow up as a healthy, happy, and responsible global citizen.' - Oxfam Kid’s Mother – Esther Chan
