Climate change impacts everyone’s food and water security, but people living in poverty bear the brunt. Extreme weather events like floods, droughts, typhoons and rising sea levels all seriously affect the lives and livelihoods of poor communities, as well as their food security. If we are to eliminate poverty, we must address the impacts climate change has on people living in poverty.
In the past 10 years, over 20 million people a year – one person every two seconds – were internally displaced by extreme weather disasters.
As of 2021, 2.3 billion people face food insecurity issues, of which 924 million people are severely food insecure. The ‘Global Report on Food Crises’, led by the Food Security Information Network (FSIN), says that 258 million people across 58 countries are now experiencing acute hunger – 65 million additional people (up 34 per cent) over last year.
In 2022, the continued drought in East Africa, record-breaking rainfall in Pakistan, and record-breaking heat waves in China and Europe affected tens of millions of people, resulting in a decrease in crop yields, leading to food insecurity, and causing billions of dollars in losses and damages.
Although we’re fighting climate change, poor communities need solutions now. That's why we need your help to support smallholders farmers to adapt to climate change now!
‘There has been a total failure of all crops for the last four years. I had 300 animals, now I only have about 20 goats.’
—— Kawsar Omer Abdi, Somali region, Ethiopia
