(1:30pm)Oxfam promptly responds to Sichuan earthquake, sends team to Ya’an for assessment

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Lushan County, Ya’an City, Sichuan Province (30.3° N, 103.0° E) on 20 April 2013 at 8:02am Beijing Time with an epicentre depth at 13 km, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre. The latest figures from the Emergency Response Office in Sichuan indicate that as of noon today, the quake has left 46 people dead. International agency Oxfam has sent a team of workers to Ya’an for immediate assessment.

Oxfam’s Chengdu Office has contacted our partners in the disaster area to understand the latest situation. A team of four set off to worst-hit Lushan County at noon today to conduct damage assessment. Meanwhile, the remaining staff in the Chengdu Office is preparing to dispatch relief supplies from the emergency warehouse and arrange for logistics. If the assessment indicates the need for more assistance, Oxfam will send additional support from the Kunming Office to the quake-stricken area.

Oxfam has launched an emergency appeal in response to the disaster. We aim to raise HK$1 million.

Earlier, Oxfam released the "5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake Five-Year-On Report of Oxfam Hong Kong" to introduce the reconstruction progress after the 5.12 earthquake. Oxfam promptly responded to the emergency in Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces after the earthquake happened. In the past five years, Oxfam has been working with 91 partners including government departments, local NGOs and research institutes to work on emergency relief and rehabilitation work in the affected regions. As of February 2013, Oxfam has contributed HK$166 million to 216 projects in the three provinces including 28 emergency relief projects and 188 reconstruction programmes, assisting over 850,000 people.
