Oxfam Trailwalker 2015 briefingOxfam and AIA Collaborate to Promote Healthy LifestylesPrincipal of Christian Zheng Sheng College and experts to share experience & training tips

Oxfam Hong Kong, together with new Principal Sponsor, AIA, will be holding Oxfam Trailwalker 2015. A total of 1,300 teams comprising 5,200 walkers will take part in Hong Kong’s largest fundraising hiking event on 20-22 November 2015. A briefing session that saw over 300 walkers in attendance was held at AIA Hong Kong Tower today to help walkers be better equipped for the challenge.

To thank AIA for their sponsorship of Oxfam Trailwalker for the 3 years beginning 2015, Dr. Stephen Fisher, Director General of Oxfam Hong Kong, presented a specially designed Oxfam Trailwalker T-shirt, which has a bib with the AIA stock code “1299” printed on it, to Mr. Jacky Chan, Chief Executive Officer of AIA Hong Kong and Macau. They hope the partnership will encourage people of Hong Kong to start adopting a healthy lifestyle while at the same time helping reduce global poverty.

“For many years, AIA has supported us through their active participation in Oxfam Trailwalker. We are honoured that they have taken their support further by becoming our Principal Sponsor this year. Partnership is the Oxfam Trailwalker spirit; that is why our theme this year is ‘Side By Side, Together We Thrive’. Through this fundraiser, we hope to work together with our sponsors, supporting organisations, walkers and volunteers to empower poor people to escape poverty and become self-reliant, so that together we can achieve a world without poverty,” said Dr. Stephen Fisher.

Mr. Jacky Chan, Chief Executive Officer of AIA Hong Kong and Macau, said, “Oxfam Trailwalker is a challenging event that is a test of perseverance and physical ability. The partnership and support between walkers to overcome a variety of challenges mirrors AIA’s brand promise of being ‘The Real Life Company’. Besides demonstrating our corporate social responsibility to the effort to alleviate poverty, we also want to encourage the public to lead a healthy lifestyle. As the Principal Sponsor, AIA will be fielding a recording-breaking 20 teams with 80 staff and financial planners to support the event, and it will be the largest corporate team this year. We will also introduce the brand-new ‘AIA Vitality - Dare to Challenge Award’ to recognise the most outstanding team that joins Oxfam Trailwalker for the first time, to motivate everyone towards a healthy life journey.”

Dr. Alman Chan Siu Cheuk, Principal of Christian Zheng Sheng College, was invited to share how his students finished the 100km trail last year. Dr. Chan strongly encouraged his students to participate in Oxfam Trailwalker, as he believes that every step they take in this journey will show them what it means to persevere and believe in themselves. Super Trailwalker Mr. Frankie Tong also gave some tips from over 10 years of trailwalking experience, and encouraged participants to try their best to finish the journey.

At the briefing session, Ms. Brenda Wong, Acting Director of Fundraising and Communications (Fundraising), Oxfam Hong Kong, briefed walkers and their supporters on event details and safety measures. Dr. Kenneth Wu, a Specialist in Emergency Medicine, Associate Consultant, Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital, reminded participants to do sufficient training beforehand, and shared tips on treating common medical problems. Mr. Frank Hung, from the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association - Sports Specialty Group, provided participants with physiotherapy tips and advised that good training is the best protection against injuries.

In teams of four, walkers are required to complete the 100km rugged MacLehose Trail over 20 hills and other trails within 48 hours. The trail starts at Pak Tam Chung in Sai Kung and ends at Po Leung Kuk Jockey Club, Tai Tong Holiday Camp in Yuen Long. Oxfam Trailwalker is the largest hiking fundraiser in Hong Kong. Since 1986, the event has attracted more than 88,000 walkers and has successfully raised over HK$470 million to support Oxfam's global work in poverty alleviation, disaster relief and policy advocacy. The fundraising target of Oxfam Trailwalker 2015 is HK$32 million.

About Oxfam Trailwalker

Oxfam Trailwalker (previously called ”Trailwalker”) began in Hong Kong in 1981 as a military training exercise for the elite Queen’s Gurkha Signals Regiment. In 1986, Oxfam Hong Kong was invited to co-organise the event and in the same year the event was open to the public. Along with the retreat of the Gurkhas in 1997, Oxfam Hong Kong took over the event. Through the years, Oxfam Trailwalker has become one of the largest fundraising and hiking events, and will be held in 16 cities in 10 countries including Hong Kong this year.
